Hybrid integration platform for digital added value



At Liebherr-Hydraulikbagger GmbH, each machine is an individual piece configured according to the individual wishes of its customers. In order to be closer to the customer in the future – and that in each phase of the product life cycle, Liebherr is relying completely on the digital transformation of its value-added chain and building up a highly available service network open to any other desired systems.


Liebherr worked with us to devise a hybrid integration architecture that provides standardised endpoints (services) in Microsoft Azure allowing the docking of the back-end systems of retailers. Behind these Azure services, reliable and secure communications from the Microsoft cloud to the central Liebherr systems is being created, among these the Product Configurator and the CRM system.

The central interface between the retailer systems and the cloud-based and on-premises systems of Liebherr is the Microsoft BizTalk Server.

"We decided on thecombination of Azure and BizTalk because we regard Microsoft as a strategic partner and supplier who supports us in driving integration with our retailers and the digital transformation forward in a cost-efficient, resource-conserving way", says Liebherr Project Manager H. Bach. "In the decision-making process, we drew up a proof of concept with multiple potential suppliers. Here the solution based on Microsoft technologies clearly stood out from it competitors in terms of cost and resource efficiency. Finally, another decisive factor was the Microsoft Partner QUIBIQ, who impressed us with its relevant expertise in Azure and BizTalk Server."

The combination of Azure and BizTalk Server is supplemented by additional cloud-based components, including Azure API Management for securing cloud endpoints/services, Azure Logic Apps as the cloud workflow component, Azure SQL for the secure storage of data and Azure Service Bus as the transport layer in the cloud. On-premises, Liebherr relies not only on the BizTalk Server as mentioned above, but also on the Microsoft SQL Server and the Azure on-premises data gateway to ensure a secure connection in the cloud.

The implementation of the BizTalk interface to the back-end and the service façade in Azure for the retailer systems and customer machines opens up entirely new possibilities for the digital transformation of the value-added chain of Liebherr all the way down to the individual machine in the field:
